Frequently Asked Questions

How to install a speed bag swivel from The Thrasher House?

The Thrasher House EVO 14 speed bag swivel is designed to be compatible with most screw settings, so just remove your old swivel and position the new EVO 14 with its core ball on the speed bag platform and screw it with the available screws using a screwdriver.

If you have a brand new speed bag platform that does not have pre-drilled holes, place the EVO speed bag swivel in the desired location and mark the spots for the holes. Create pilot holes using a drill and after that, screw in the swivel. If you are using electric screwdriver, be careful not to damage the wood or the swivel.

Once the speed bag swivel is installed, insert the T-hook into the speed bag and attach it to the EVO swivel. You are now ready to train with your new speed bag setup.

What type of speed bag swivel are there?

There are mainly four types of speed bag swivels, so let's take a closer look on them.

Firstly, Ballhook swivels can be composed of a one-piece housing or a two-piece housing. The two-piece one is to accommodate both chainlink and ballhook attachments. The main parts of this swivel include its base, which attaches to the board, and the bottom part, mainly composed of the "S" hook, the ball and also the ball housing. Moreover, the hook size and shape, along with the thickness and width of the leather loop attachment of the speed bag, influence the ease of attaching and detaching it.

The chain link swivel is a fast and quiet type of speed bag swivel. However, it can be more complicated to deal with due to the locking pin, which may require the use of the right set of pliers. Furthermore, they can have different sizes, but they are all composed by the same parts. The base to attach to the board, the swivel housing, and also the small parts required to attaching the bag.

The u-bar speed bag swivel is typically composed of three sections: the base housing and ball bearings, the locking pin, and the bag attachment u-bolt. They easily fit together and these swivels are usually efficient for speed bag workouts. Moreover, the dimensions of the u-bar are crucial. For example, a larger one will result in a longer rebound arc for the bag and a slower action, while a smaller u-bar will result in a faster bag rebound.

In addition, there are also custom swivels such as the special ball hook swivels created by The Thrasher House. These swivels are designed and crafted by our great friend Jeff Thrasher. His exclusive line called "EVO", features a distinctive shape and Jeff constantly enhance it year after year. For example, the new EVO 14X entirely made of stainless steel. How to choose the correct speed bag size?

When choosing the size of the speed bag that is most suitable for you, there are two crucial factors to consider: the size of your speed bag platform and your bagging ability.

Firstly, each speed bag platform diameter is compatible with a specific range of bag sizes, which increases as the diameter grows. If you want to know which size of bag is suitable for yours, check our speed bag size guide here.

Your bagging ability is another important factor to consider as the size of the speed bag affects the difficulty of bagging. Smaller bags have faster rebounds and are more challenging to hit, making them suitable for advanced users. For this reason, beginners should start with larger bags.

How can I take care of my speed bag?

Speed bags can be made from various types of finished leathers, such as cowhide, kangaroo, or synthetic materials. To properly care for the leather of your bag, regardless of the type of leather, there are some common precautions you should follow. Firstly, we recommend wiping your speed bag with a clean cloth after each use. Additionally, it is advisable to periodically treat the leather with a conditioning cream or oil. The choice between the two depends on your personal preference, as both are effective solutions. Furthermore, it is important to ensure that the bag is not overpressurized, as this can cause damage to the leather. Moreover, consider deflating the bag when not in use, as this will help maintain the leather in good condition. This will certainly maximize the lifespan of your speed bag.
